The Great Commandment

Love must be sincere.

Romans 12:9

I saw a post on social media today from someone who said “How can you give something that you haven’t received?” He was referring to how we have received the ultimate gift of God’s love and because of that, we must learn to love others like Christ has loved us.

We are literally commanded to do this.

Check out these verses from the book of Matthew 22:34-40 below;

But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.

We’ve been given the gift of love. Pure, unconditional, selfless love from our Father in heaven. So now that we’ve been given this…we have no reason not to give it to others!

If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.
1 John 4:20-21

So many of us walk with hate in our heart. It’s so easy to do. We’re wired in 2021 to be self-centered. I don’t even think we realize we’re doing it. It’s like second nature to us now. But when was the last time you actually practiced “love thy neighbor”? I mean REALLY practiced it with pure love in your heart. Not out of obligation or not smiling to their face but talking about them behind their back. Or not just the neighbor you like…but with a pure, selfless love that we are called to share because we’ve been given this amazing gift from God.

I’ll be brutally honest….I don’t know if I can say I remember the last time I have. This is my challenge to myself and to you.

First, accept Jesus into your heart and acknowledge Him as your Lord and Savior. Understand that His promise of life eternal comes because He loves you SO much that He died on the cross for YOU!

Second, pray for a deep understanding of that amazing grace and love. Spend time in prayer and in scripture, getting to know God and understand how to love Him back.

Three, share that love. Find someone and be kind to them. Share your experience with God. Tell them about Jesus. Love them.

When you understand how precious His love is, all you want to do is scream it from the roof top. It changes you from the very core of your soul.

Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. 1 John 4:8
