Did God Create The Devil?
The short answer is, yes. God created all things. Freedom of choice was always Gods will and still is. He created Lucifer in perfection and Lucifer chose to become a devil. Satan was with God in the garden of Eden, as it says in Ezekiel 28:14 and in Ezekiel 28:15 it says “You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you”.
So I think that we can all agree, God’s word is pretty clear that He did in fact create Lucifer.
But why? Why would God, in all His infinite Wisdom, choose to create Satan…knowing full well that he would rebel and fall in sin?
This is a question that seems simple and complicated all at once.
God is love. His creation from the very beginning was good (Genesis 1:31). His plan from the beginning was for us to have freedom to choose of our own free will. Lucifer had that same choice. Freedom to choose is a gift but it can often be dangerous. It says in our study guide that “if God had refused to create Lucifer, He would have been going against one of His own characteristics of love; that is, the freedom to choose.”
In life, you ALWAYS have a choice. You can choose to follow God or to follow the ways of the world and when you do that, you ultimately are choosing Satan. 1 John 5:19 says “We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.”
It’s a simple choice with complicated paths and Christians are not exempt from the struggle and battle we all face. We all fall short and we do (if we’re honest with ourselves) often forget to put God first before the ways of the world.
The best part of this story is that evil, sin and Satan have all been conquered by Jesus Christ. 1 John 3:8 says, “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil”. By the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the battle was won. Though we still fight the battle of the flesh, by using our freedom of choice to choose God, we won’t have to fight that battle forever. Look no further than John 3:16 and that beautiful verse that says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”
